writing a good covering letter
Your covering letter is your first introduction to a prospective employer and the strength of this introduction often determines whether or not you get a subsequent interview. Remember you only get one chance to make a good first impression! So be sure to follow these guidelines.
Your covering letter should
Be addressed to the person mentioned in the job advertisement, and not "To Whom It May Concern"
Begin by explaining why you are writing
Ensure there are no grammar or spelling mistakes
Set out the reasons why you think you are a good candidate for the position
Be clear, concise and to the point, because it demonstrates your ability to communicate and structure your ideas
Be positive, because it is a reflection of your personality
Emphasize the positive contribution you would make to the team and the employer
Highlight some relevant points that may not have been covered in your résumé
Be interesting and original, so you really grab the reader's attention
The structure of your letter should follow the widely accepted norm of three sections:
First paragraph. Explain why you are sending your résumé (mention the title of the job you are applying for and how you learned about it).
Second paragraph. Explain why you are interested in the position and why you would like to work at that particular company rather than another.
Third paragraph. Politely and respectfully ask for an interview.
